To All PSAC-YEU Local Y011 Yukon University Employees Union members:
Your bargaining team met the employer this week. We were hopeful that we could resolve the agreement, but we remain far apart on money. Both sides have made proposals as follows:
| Union’s Proposal | Employer’s Proposal | |
| July 1, 2024 | 12% | 4.25% |
| July 1, 2025 | 4.5% | 3.5% |
| July 1, 2026 | 4.5% | 3% |
We believe that we deserve more than what the employer has offered for a number of reasons:
- We saw the Yukon Teachers’ Association get a 3-year agreement with increases of 8.15%, 3% and 3%. This is over 3.25% more over the life of the agreement than the employer’s offer.
- We received lower increases than any other public-sector group in the Territory during the last round, including Yukon Government employees.
- We lost a substantial amount of buying power over the last few years due to high inflation and high costs of living in the Territory.
Other issues remain as well, including improving vacation leave, getting fair and reasonable telework arrangements in place, minimizing the use of casual employees and improving stipends for sessional instructors.
We will be filing for conciliation, which is the next step in the process. This involves bringing in a neutral person whose job will be to try to assist to get a deal. From there, in the coming weeks, we will be organizing strike votes. A strike vote doesn’t necessarily mean that we will be on strike. It is a critical tool that we have to show the employer that we are unified and will push for a better deal. Your support will be necessary to get a good deal!
Please continue to stay informed and speak with any team member if you have questions.
