Yukon University Bargaining Update #1

To All PSAC-YEU Local Y011 Yukon University Employees Union members:

Bargaining has Begun

Your bargaining team spent three days with the employer to begin discussions to renew your collective agreement.

Based on the input that we received from members, we tabled a full package of proposals to provide a fair and strong agreement for everyone.  You can find the package attached to this email.  Some of our priorities for this round will include:

  • Obtaining fair economic increases for everyone – we intend to address the high cost of living and as well as catch-up for the increases that we didn’t get last round
  • Modifying the rank and title system to make it more transparent and fair
  • Making improvements to a number of leaves to allow for more flexibility for members
  • Improving special payments such as standby, Northern Travel Allowance and
  • Addressing mounting workload concerns for non-faculty

The employer also brought a package of proposals. In particular, we are concerned that they have proposed to cap our sick leave accumulation at 180 days.  We will push back against this proposed change.

In our initial discussions, we made some headway on non-monetary issues, including improvements to special leave and pay administration.  While wages will be of critical importance, we will only begin to talk about monetary proposals further down the road.  We will be developing a comprehensive proposal that includes catch-up and fair increases for all members.

We will be meeting with the employer again in mid-January to continue the process.  Please continue to stay informed and feel free to talk with any team member if you have questions.
