Yukon Government Bargaining Update #17: Conciliation Continues, Mobilization Steward Sign-Up, and Labour Day Plans

Your bargaining team met this week and is pleased to report that, further to our bulletin from a few weeks ago, all three conciliation board members have been appointed, and conciliation board hearing dates have now been finalized.

The meetings will be held in Whitehorse and are set for October 21, 22, and 23. Additional hearing dates, if needed, can be extended through the weekend.

The Union and the Employer teams will each make formal board representations, and the Union team is prepared to strongly defend our proposals. We expect a fairly quick turnaround as, after considering all the evidence, the board will typically issue a report with recommendations within 14 days of the hearings. These recommendations are non-binding, but we expect our next steps will be guided by the contents of that report.

A board chair has been agreed to and appointed – Andres Barker. Mr. Barker is a former Vice Chair and Associate Chair of the Mediation and Adjudication division of the British Columbia Labour Board. He now works as an independent arbitrator. The Employer representative will be Mr. James “Jim” Connell.

The appointed Union representative is Ms. Gaby Levesque.  Gaby worked as a labour lawyer before joining the PSAC in 2001. She spent several years as a national negotiator. At the time, her portfolio contained many northern units, including Yukon Government.

Mobilization Steward Sign-Up

Get involved! We’re looking for members to step up as Mobilization Stewards in workplaces across the Yukon.

As a Mobilization Steward, you’ll help keep your co-workers informed by sharing the latest bargaining updates and helping build a strong, united workplace.

There are many ways to get involved, including serving as a worksite contact, helping with desk drops, keeping bulletin boards up to date, and supporting other workplace activities as we mobilize together.

It only takes 30 seconds to sign up.

Labour Day BBQ Invitation & Volunteer Opportunity

Come help make our annual Labour Day BBQ a success at Shipyards Park in Whitehorse on September 7th.

Whether you can volunteer for a couple of hours or the entire event, your support will help make this one of YEU’s biggest community celebrations of the year.

Even if you can’t volunteer, we still want you to come grab some food and hang out with your colleagues. We have enough free food for everyone, so bring all your friends! We will be at Shipyards Park in Whitehorse, serving food from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on September 7th.

Thank you for supporting your Union—we look forward to celebrating Labour Day with you!

We will be providing more information about upcoming bargaining-related events early this fall.

In solidarity,
