Four Foundational Learning Workshops for Stewards modules will be delivered over two days. This course is open to all PSAC members in good standing in the Yukon who are currently Shop Stewards or interested in becoming a Shop Steward.
TOPICS
How Stewards Can Get Members More Involved
- Take a critical look at where union members fit into the labour relations context in the workplace.
- Identify measures for better organizing and mobilizing members in the workplace.
- Map out their valuable connections with union activists and members in the workplace and identify ways of expanding their union networks.
- Hone their communication skills with a focus on listening, speaking and planning one-on-one conversations with members
- Practice recruiting and mobilizing members to become more involved in their union.
Stewards as Problem Solvers
- Explore conflict resolution tips that can be used in the workplace.
- Practice holding meetings, interviewing complainants and documenting important facts.
- Brainstorm ways to deal with workplace problems using informal/alternative approaches to conflict resolution.
Duty of Fair Representation
- Define the duty of fair representation and look at the legal parameters set out for its application.
- Identify how to best comply with the principles and practices of fair representation.
Trauma Informed Advocacy
- Identify ways to integrate trauma-informed practice in all aspects of our work as Stewards.
- Understand what trauma is and how to best support members affected by it
- Explore best practices for trauma-informed advocacy as a Steward.
- Participants are encouraged to attend with resolution ideas in mind.
PSAC will pay for travel, accommodation, loss of salary and benefits (where applicable). Family care will be reimbursed in accordance with PSAC’s Family Care Policy. In addition, participants residing in Whitehorse are entitled to claim $50.00 per day to offset transportation and lunch costs.
