Regional Women's Committees
The Whitehorse and Dawson City Regional Women's Committees (RWC) are independent decision-making committees pursuant to the Constitution of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). The RWC provides advice and advocacy on regional concerns of women represented by the PSAC. Women make up more than half of the PSAC membership. In the Yukon, this would include over 1500 women working for the Territorial Government, Federal Government, Day Cares, Transition Homes, Yukon College, Child Development Centre, Yukon Hospital Corp., Yukon Energy Corp., Klondike Visitors' Association and City of Whitehorse. RWC's were established in the mid-1980s to further address women's issues and concerns such as systemic discrimination and barriers working women face within and outside their workplace. The committees provide important forums to strategize for positive change in women's lives.
These committees have a mandate to develop projects and activities to promote active participation and advancement of women in the union and labour movement; mobilize women around specific demands such as universal, accessible and quality childcare, pay equity, ending violence and harassment, maternity/parental leave, more flexible work hours, job security and many others, as well as working with coalitions from within the labour and social justice community.
All women who are PSAC members are welcome to participate on the committee. Contact the PSAC office at 667-2331 if you would like information on meeting dates or to be added to the committee's e-mail list.
