Make every vote count

From Yellowknife to Charlottetown to Vancouver citizens gathered today for snap actions at over 50 MP offices to remind the Liberals of their election promise on electoral reform

Yellowknife – More than a dozen northerners visited the office of MP McLeod today to remind the Liberals that they made a commitment to reform Canada’s broken first-past-the-post electoral system - and that they should keep that promise.
The snap action, which was organized in just a few days, was part of a national day of action called “Make Every Vote Count” at over 50 MP offices across the country. The actions were organized in response to what seems to be backtracking from the Liberals on their electoral reform promise.
Local volunteers delivered a copy of the Liberals’ 2015 election promise on electoral reform to Liberal MP McLeod’s office.
The Leadnow community came together to organize this action out of concern that the Liberal government is walking back their promise on electoral reform.
Recent consultations conducted by the government and testimony from experts showed clear support for proportional representation. Yet the Liberals dismissed a recent report from the Electoral Reform Committee, which recommended proportional representation with a referendum. The Prime Minister and Minister of Democratic Institutions Maryam Monsef have also questioned in recent interviews whether there is strong support for change among Canadians.
The Leadnow community wanted to let the Liberals know that people across the country -- including the progressive voters who helped elect them -- support proportional representation and will hold them accountable for their flagship democratic reform promise.
The Make Every Vote Count national day of action was organised locally by Alternatives North, supported and facilitated by Leadnow.
